mapping attachments - aircon units
Project Type
Visualisation
Date
October 2024
Air conditioning units have become a common feature on city facades, disrupting -or enhancing- the building’s design with bulky, exposed forms. These awkward machines cling to buildings like afterthoughts, buildings wear them like a hasty accessory. They are mounted directly to walls or held up by brackets, adding unintended, but incidentally coordinated texture to the facade. The result is a disjointed landscape where functionality overshadows design. Alongside other attachments like awnings, cables, and signs, they form an orderly chaotic tapestry that reflects the complexities of urban occupations. This juxtaposition challenges our perceptions of beauty, utility, urbanity, revealing how our constantly changing needs alter the face, and mosty, our perception of urban environments.
The zine was created as a small sample of my thesis project on mapping attachments and a copy is held at The Athens Zine Bibliotheque.
